Frequently Asked Questions
Why is the 2022 State of the Science now offered virtual only?
After evaluating the current pandemic environment and its effects on the healthcare systems, personnel and their families, the AAHPM Board of Directors have decided to cancel the in-person 2022 State of the Science. With the growing number of registrant and faculty cancellations, as well as the numerous institutional travel restrictions in place, our leadership has determined that it is in the best interest not to move forward with the in-person meeting offering.
I was registered for the in-person State of the Science. Do I need to re-register for the virtual State of the Science?
Each attendee registered for the in-person meeting will be automatically transferred to the virtual State of the Science experience. There is nothing more you need to do.
Attendees that do not wish to attend the virtual conference must send a request in writing to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. to cancel their registration through January 31, 2022. A $100 processing fee will be charged for all cancellations received by January 31, 2022. No refunds will be made under any circumstances on cancellations dated after January 31, 2022. Refunds, if approved, will be issued 2-4 weeks after the meeting.
Will attendees and exhibitors be refunded by AAHPM for hotel and airline costs?
AAHPM will not be able to reimburse you for your travel expenses.
For those who have already booked a hotel in an AAHPM room block at one of our host hotels, your room reservation will be automatically cancelled. If you booked a hotel room outside of the AAHPM room block or at another property, you will need to cancel that reservation on your own.
Regarding flight reservations please contact your airline for their specific change and cancellation policies for your flight.
Can AAHPM apply my registration to a future meeting or event?
No, it is the Academy's policy to refund registration fees if an individual no longer wishes to attend an AAHPM-sponsored event. You will need to register separately for future events.
I was scheduled to present a session, paper, or case at the in-person State of the Science. Does the cancellation of the in-person portion mean I can no longer list my presentation on my resume or CV?
Even though your presentation may be altered, it is acceptable to include your presentation or poster in your CV and note that the in-person conference was cancelled. Use the following resource to guide your resume or CV update.
Abstracts will be printed in an upcoming issue of the Journal of Pain and Symptom Management (JPSM).
Will any additional sessions be made available virtually?
The State of the Science planning committees and staff are hard at work preparing for a fully virtual schedule. Revisualizing opportunities for engagement and connection planning is under development.
For faculty and presenters: the staff and Assembly leaders are working on contingency plans and will share options for presenting the content that you have all worked hard to develop.
Will sessions be made available for on-demand viewing?
The State of the Science content will be available in live virtual format only and will not be recorded.
What time zone will the virtual conference schedule follow?
Central Standard Time is the official time zone of the virtual State of the Science program.
If I wanted to support the Academy with a donation, how can I do that?
Thank you for your support and thoughtfulness. Although we cannot transfer any existing payments to a donation fund, you can make a donation directly at aahpm.org/donate.
Can I still connect with exhibitors virtually?
Yes, companies have been given the option to exhibit virtually, and you will be able to chat with them through their virtual booth and discuss important issues with them in the Action Lab Session on Wednesday, February 9.
