Pathways to Palliative Care
Dr. Sree Battu—From Cancer Rehabilitation to Palliative Care
Marcin Chwistek, MD FAAHPM
“What we do in the rehab medicine is so similar to palliative care,” said Sree Battu, MD, during our conversation in early April. We had plans to connect in person at the Annual Assembly but the fourth Nor’Easter of the season forced us to change these plans. “I think of rehabilitative medicine as early palliative care,” she continued, and as we went on to discuss her professional path, it became increasingly clear to me that these two disciplines have more in common than I previously realized.
Battu is a physical medicine and rehabilitation (PM&R) specialist working at the Cleveland Clinic, where she is an attending physician on the acute rehabilitation floor. She also provides consultative services across the hospital, is an associate program director for the PM&R residency program, and is involved in multiple quality assurance initiatives at the system level.
