Hospice and Palliative Medicine Fellowship Training

Fellowship programs are a period of subspecialty training that a physician may undertake after completing a residency.

A fellowship in the subspecialty of hospice and palliative medicine is mandatory in order to sit for the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) or American Osteopathic Association (AOA) board certification examinations. 

Hospice and palliative medicine fellowship programs are available for:

• allopathic physicians certified in
  • anesthesiology
  • emergency medicine
  • family medicine
  • internal medicine
  • obstetrics and gynecology
  • pediatrics
  • physical medicine and rehabilitation
  • psychiatry and neurology
  • surgery
  • and radiology

Some programs include an additional track in pediatrics, geriatrics, research or public health.

Obtaining a Fellowship Position

National Resident Match Program (NRMP)

The hospice and palliative medicine subspecialty is participating in the National Resident Match Program (NRMP) Medical Specialties Matching Program. Participation in the Match program allows applicants and programs to consider all options before making a decision. This match service is specific to ACGME-accredited fellowship programs.
