Continuing HPM Certification
The American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) and each co-sponsoring HPM Board (Anesthesiology, Emergency, Family Medicine, Pediatrics) have guidelines for continuing certification. Check with your primary board to stay current with continuing certification requirements and deadlines. Hospice and palliative medicine diplomates from qualifying boards follow ABIM continuing certification guidelines for HPM.
Allopathic Continuing Certification Assessment
You have options for maintaining your hospice and palliative medicine (HPM) subspecialty board certification.
Through the American Board of Internal Medicine’s (ABIM) new Longitudinal Knowledge Assessment (LKA®), you have more options to maintain your board certification and earn MOC points. ABIM offers assessment options for busy physicians looking to keep their knowledge current and demonstrate their commitment to providing the best care possible to their patients.

Osteopathic Continuous Certification
If you hold a time-limited certificate, you are required to participate in the four components of the OCC process in order to maintain your Certificate of Added Qualification (CAQ) in HPM.
DOs with a Certificate of Added Qualification in hospice and palliative medicine are required to maintain certification in the underlying, primary Board. Please contact your primary Board for details.
About Allopathic Qualifying Boards:
December 2021 update: The American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) has approved the following boards to move from co-sponsoring boards to qualifying boards in hospice and palliative medicine.
- American Board of Gynecology (ABOG)
- American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (ABPMR)
- American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN)
- American Board of Radiology (ABR), and the American Board of Surgery (ABS)
For HPM-certified diplomates from these boards:
- Once certified in the HPM subspecialty, you become a diplomate of ABIM for the HPM subspecialty and must meet all ABIM's requirements for Maintenance of Certification (MOC) in the HPM.
- The physician's original board no longer manages your certification and MOC for the subspecialty of HPM.
