"I was 90 minutes late for dinner with Ira Byock and his wife, Yvonne Corbeil!" Matthew Gonzales, MD FAAHPM, told me over the phone when we connected in late March to discuss his captivating path to palliative care. "The LA traffic was especially difficult that night, and I thought to myself, 'There is no way this is going to work out!'" Byock recently had relocated to California to be closer to his family and was looking for collaborators for his new project, the Institute for Human Caring, where he is the founder and chief medical officer. Despite the troublesome start, their relationship flourished, and Gonzales now speaks of Byock with reverence and gratitude.
