It was a warm and sunny day when I made my trip to the campus of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. Susan Block, MD FAAHPM, was invited to present "How Serious Illness Communication Translates Humanism into Action" at the 2nd Annual Berkman Lectureship in Palliative Care. A few weeks earlier, I had interviewed Block; we had spoken for nearly an hour, and I was enormously grateful for her time and tour de force narrative of her 4-decade career. I had pages of notes that I feverishly scrawled during our conversation, but no clear plan on how to skillfully capture her wide-ranging and influential career into a slim column. Is it even possible, I thought?
